What you Should Know about Manhole Covers

Manholes are important elements of construction which serve a lot of purposes. They are installed so that maintenance workers can access the underground piping and telecom lines laid out under the roads. Also, they offer easy access for meters which measure the liquid flow in the sewer lines. Manholes are made using a variety of materials such as fiberglass, plastic, and concrete. The material of choice is based on factors like manhole shape and the intended application. Learn about the different manhole materials here.

Manholes must be covered to prevent pedestrians from falling into it. Manhole covers also help vehicles run smoothly on the roads, ensuring tires don’t get stuck in. If you are looking to buy manhole covers for your project, read on to get helpful information.

Kinds of Manhole Covers

Manhole covers are available in different materials and designs that provide a unique set of features and benefits. Apart from the manhole cover’s dimensions, the material it is made of is a considerable factor. This material determines the amount of load the cover can hold and its ability to withstand the test of time.

These days, people are using composite manhole covers. When compared to cast iron covers, composite covers have higher load ability and lifespan. Composite manhole covers are available in three kinds:

  • Fiber reinforced plastic. This kind of composite manhole cover has elements such as unsaturated polyester resin, glass fiber, two kinds of additives, and quartz. They feature a good surface and are resistant to wear. Also, they have very high load ability.
  • Bulk molding compound. These are made using elements like glass fiber, unsaturated polyester resins, steel bars, and calcium carbonate. They have a smooth surface and a uniform color. But, their load ability is lower than fiber reinforced plastic and they are susceptible to friction.
  • Sheet moulding compound. These plastic manhole covers are made using calcium carbonate, glass fiber, unsaturated polyester resins, and a small amount of additives. They showcase a better load ability than bulk molding compound but are also susceptible to friction.

Manhole Covers that Fit Manholes

Just like manhole covers, manholes serve a lot of good purposes and they can only serve these when they are made of the right materials. Plastic is a durable material that possesses its own characteristics and features. Whether you are buying manholes or manhole covers, make sure you buy from a reputable supplier.
